What is Charisma?

Charisma is defined as a “personal magnetism or charm” and a “unique personal quality attributed to leaders who arouse fervent popular devotion and enthusiasm.” The term comes from the Greek kharisma, meaning “gift” or “favor,” which in turn is derived from kharis, meaning “grace.” Charisma is closely related to presence, which is defined as “a quality of poise and effectiveness that enables a performer to achieve a close relationship with his or her audience.” The abilities to be poised, effective and achieve a close connection to those with whom we are interacting are important resources for coaches, trainers, managers and professional communicators of all types.
The dictionary defines authenticity as: “an emotionally genuine, appropriate, significant, purposive, and responsible mode of human life.” Thus, authentic charisma comes from the capacity to be present, centered in yourself and in relationship and harmony with individuals and the environment around you. The quality of charisma is frequently the “difference that makes the difference” in our ability exert influence, collaborate generatively and contribute to the growth and transformation of others.
Some people are able to live their lives with passion and a sense of meaning that brings an exceptional level of energy and vitality into their everyday experience. In fact, one of the most common characteristics of successful people is their passion for what they do.
While charisma is typically considered a special gift, according to NLP it is also a function of skills that can be learned. Applying the process of Success Factor Modeling, NLP has identified some of the key ways in which successful people intentionally strengthen their charisma and use their passion to bring more satisfaction and determination into their daily activities and into the lives of others. Some of these strategies include:
• Connecting to the center and “source” of your identity
• Feeling centered and open to new possibilities around you
• Continually enhancing your personal competence and expertise
• Expressing your identity in projects and actions—Connecting what you care about to what you do and linking future goals to concrete examples of past successes
• Getting a clear picture of your goals and their connection to the “big picture” of your life
• Managing your energy and bringing positive energy into all that you do
• Creating a sense of alignment and connection to your vision, mission and core values
• Fostering a feeling of contribution to something important that will in some way “change the world”

Robert Dilts
Robert Dilts is a trainer, consultant, and prolific author. His books and articles have been translated into many languages.
One of the earliest and most productive developers of NLP, Robert was one of the first students of John Grinder and Richard Bandler and participated in the creation of NLP. In addition, Robert studied with Milton Erickson and Gregory Bateson.
In 1980, Robert came up with Sleight of Mouth, and in 1999 he published a book on Sleight of Mouth that became an international bestseller. And last year, Robert published Sleight of Mouth 2, taking the patterns to a new level.
In addition, Robert has written more than 35 books related to NLP, including the following:
Robert Dilts has also consulted Apple Computer, Alitalia airline, Lucasfilm Ltd., Fiat, Xerox, the Italian State Railway and many other major companies. He also developed a project for IBM Europe, built on the basis of systems theory and systems thinking.
Robert Dilts also teaches in more than 25 countries around the world.
In addition, Robert Dilts founded NLP University in Santa Cruz, California and created Dilts Strategy Group, a consulting, coaching and training company with a global network of consultants in more than 25 countries.
